| An innovative approach to well-being at work becomes an integral part of the Tesco Service Leadership Programme |

By 1995, Tesco was the largest food retailer in the UK. In its last financial year, the company reported total sales of £22.8bn, with pre-tax profits of £1070m. By 2002 it had 692 stores, 64 in Central Europe and 61 in Asia. It is the world’s number one on-line grocer. The company currently has over 190,000 full-time employees in the UK. |

Two values drive the whole way the company does business, the second of which is “We treat people the way we like to be treated”, which, in Tesco’s words “expresses the consideration we give people within and outside the company”. |

The Office for National Statistics report that 3 in 10 employees will have a mental health problems (mainly depression and anxiety disorders) each year. This suggests that potentially up to 57,000 Tesco employees could have a mental health issue in any given year. |

Tesco, aware of the pressure on managers imposed by the demands of a driven, high performing business, also recognised the possible knock-on effects of stress: the impact on performance and stress-related absenteeism. As well as offering reactive remedial support, Tesco also wanted to put into place some pro-active preventative methods to actively build the resilience of their workforce. |

LifeworX was asked to design and deliver the ‘Building Balance’ module, as part of the Stores Leadership Programme being rolled out throughout the business. The module focused on allowing individuals to gain awareness of the keys to well-being, to pay attention to their current situation (through personal profiling) and to make meaningful steps towards re-gaining their personal balance. Additional support information was provided in the form of fact-sheets and a toolkit of links.
The module has now been delivered to over 1,000 in-stores leaders.
Due to the extensive interest and impact that it has generated, it has been continued as part of the head-office leader development programme and other key development initiatives across the business. |
